There are numerous legends surrounding the origins of bagels. Some say that a baker from Krakow made them to thank the Polish king who had helped save Vienna from the Ottoman invasion, while others say they were created to honour women giving birth. In fact, their ring shape symbolises the cycle of life, and giving them as a gift was considered a sign of good luck.
