Waffles are a specialty often associated with the United States today, but before reaching there, they traveled the world: similar wafers were already prepared in Ancient Greece during festivals, then spread in the Middle Ages in France where they were called “gaufres,” and later made a stop in the 17th century in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
