Apparently, the croissant was invented by Austrian bakers who became aware of an attempted siege of the city of Vienna by the Ottomans and managed to foil it.

To commemorate their feat, they baked these crescent-shaped cakes (which is still present in Turkey’s flag) as a sign that they ‘could eat the Ottomans whenever they wanted’.
