San Nicola is from Parma as…the Ponte di Mezzo

The Ponte di Mezzo was built in 1177 following a flood of the Parma River, which it crosses.

Initially constructed in wood, it was later renovated in stone, hence its designation as the ‘Ponte di Pietra’ or Stone Bridge.
The bridge allows passage from one side of the city to the other, symbolically dividing it into two. So much so that during Parma’s tenure as the Capital of Culture in 2020+21, two signs were installed near the bridge, reading ‘Parma beyond the water’ and ‘Parma on this side of the water,’ which were removed at the end of the event.
