San Nicola is from Parma like…the Monumento a Giuseppe Verdi

To mark the centenary of Giuseppe Verdi’s death, the city of Parma decided to honour him with a grand opera dedicated to him.

The sculpture was originally located in the square in front of the railway station, before being moved to Piazzale della Pace after the Second World War.

The original monument featured 28 statues of the main characters from Verdi’s operas, but only a few survived the bombing.
