San Nicola is from Parma as…the Arco di San Lazzaro

The Arco di San Lazzaro was built in 1628 to welcome the arrival of the bride of Duke Odoardo I Farnese to Parma. Over the years, it has been renovated several times to mark the entrance of important personalities to Parma, including the Emperor of Austria, Francis Joseph, and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Initially, the Arco had Baroque decorations and verse inscriptions, but these were lost due to weathering and disinterest in the monument. In 2005, however, it was restored and modernized; today, as then, it is the gateway to the city and the monument that greets and welcomes anyone passing through the city of Parma.
